Are you planning a trip overseas? Dreading the 14 or so hours you'll spend on the plane? I used to call these long haul trials 'five-movie flights', but recently I've changed my habits as I don't watch as many movies. These days I spend the flight time listening to music, books and podcasts on long flights. It gives my eyes a rest and is less demanding on my concentration. I quite like drifting off . . .

Do you compile and listen to Spotify playlists in your car?. It's just as easy to download your favourite playlists for the plane. I've discovered film and TV show soundtracks. These are great compilations curated from contemporary and older selections. Listen to them on shuffle and surprise yourself with what you hear.

A few trips ago, I downloaded audiobooks for a long haul flight. This was a revelation. I've re-acquainted myself with classics as well as contemporary releases. My favourite has been a long travelogue by Patrick Leigh Fermor - so easy on the ear and it doesn't matter if you doze off a little.

Wear a mask

This may sound weird, but wearing a mask on long haul flights is the best thing. I may look a little funny, but it's worth it. I don't feel so dehydrated as breathing through the mask filters the cold dry plane air. But the best effect is a sense of being cocooned from the hubbub of the flight.
